Sucker Punch a Work of Imagination |
January 3, 2010 |
|
Here is just some extra tidbits about Emily’s latest film, Sucker Punch.
The set for the action-fantasy Sucker Punch sprawls through four Vancouver sound stages that together amount to an onscreen explosion of what’s in writer-director Zack Snyder’s imagination.
The director of Dawn of the Dead, 300 and the Vancouver-filmed Watchmen has returned to the city to film his first original story — after the zombie remake and the two graphic novel adaptations — and a walk through the various sets gives a clue to just how all-encompassing this genre-blending story is.
Sucker Punch is set in the 1960s, when a teenaged girl (Emily Browning) is sent to an asylum by her nasty stepfather.
Once inside, the girl bonds with several other teen patients (Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone and Jamie Chung), and she retreats into a multi-level fantasy world where she and her friends are, by turns, the star attractions in a Moulin Rouge-esque night club brothel, and sexy warriors battling robotic Germans in a stylized version of the First World War. As well, they fight dragons and knights in a medieval world, kick alien butt on a futuristic planet, and battle giant samurai in an ancient temple.
All of which means that at any time, Snyder is telling a couple of hundred artisans, technicians and stunt performers what’s in his head, from intricately carved Japanese swords to rhinestone-studded fishnet stockings, with the cast along for the wild, imaginative ride.
“You’re not just working with a director who found a script that they liked and maybe did a few storyboards a couple of months ago,” says Malone, watching this day as co-star Hudgens does a techno-belly dance musical number in the cavernous night club set.
“You’re literally working out of his imagination — it’s all in his mind, the entire film. It’s so epic in his brain that he’s just our full resource. any question you have, you can go to him.”
Which helps the cast with the film’s extensive green-screen scenes. In the Montreal-filmed 300, Snyder put Gerard Butler and cast in a totally green-screen environment with nearly every background added digitally afterwards.

‘Untitled Lemony Snicket Sequel’? |
December 3, 2009 |
|
I was just browsing around IMDB this morning, and I noticed this page up titled ‘Untitled Lemony Snicket Sequel’. It is supposedly set for 2012, but that was the only information. No other word about whether or not Emily and the other cast members will be in it. I really hope they are though, which would mean more Emily updates! I will keep everyone posted if I hear more, or if it’s just a rumor. To check out the page, click here.

Abbie Cornish says Sucker Punch is Six Films in One |
October 24, 2009 |
|
While doing press for Bright Star, HitFix was able to get actress Abbie Cornish to dish some dirt on the upcoming Zack Snyder film Sucker Punch, which began shooting in Vancouver last month.
As you know already, Snyder has called the film “Alice in Wonderland with machine guns”, a 1950’s-period action movie which tells the story of a girl named Baby Doll (Emily Browning) who is confined to a mental institution by her evil stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While imprisoned, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain. In this fantasy world, where she needs to steal five objects to help her out before she is deflowered by a vile man. So what juicy tidbits did Cornish spill?
Cornish says Snyder’s latest is “seriously, six films in one almost,” revealed that she carries “a good shot gun, a knife and a broad four”, and talked briefly about her duel roles: “I have had a field day not only play the girl in the psych ward, but the girl in crazy action sequences killing 20 guys in row.” Sounds cool to me, and we know Snyder will be able to make it look cool (my problem with most films that feature women kicking ass is that it looks forced and fake). You can read more comments from Cornish on HitFix.
The film also stars Jamie Chung (Dragonball Evolution), Jenna Malone (Into The Wild, Donnie Darko), Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical) play Cornish’s fellow inmates who also travel into the alternate reality. Carla Gugino has also been cast as a nurse in the insane asylum who becomes a madam at a brothel in the film’s alternate reality, and Mad Men star Jon Hamm plays High Roller, the owner of the sub world brothel. Warner Bros has previously announced a March 25th 2011 release date.

Scott Glenn Joins Sucker Punch |
September 20, 2009 |
|
Scott Glenn is a wise man, or at least he’ll play one in Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch. According to Empire Online, Glenn has joined the all-girl cast of the film that includes Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone and Jamie Chung. Glenn will serve as a mentor/guide to the Sucker Punch bunch. He’ll be what Professor Utonium was to the Powerpuff Girls.
The film will revolve around Browning as the lead heroine Babydoll, who tries to escape a mental asylum after she discovers that her step-father plans on having her lobotomized in five days. Jon Hamm has also been cast in the film, but it has not been confirmed whether or not he’ll be taking on the evil role.
With so many girls and so little men, I can’t help but think of other female-dominated films like Charlie’s Angels and Little Women. They all featured amazing male characters, so Glenn and Hamm will be in safe hands. Scott has plenty of roles on his resume to support his “wiseman” act, such as his take on Jack Crawford in The Silence of the Lambs. Aside from Snyder’s huge cast, the plot sounds pretty good — asylums, nicknames, action? Where do I sign up?
The action-packed film hits theaters March 15, 2011.

Sucker Punch: It’s 300 With a Female Cast |
September 1, 2009 |
|
While promoting Sorority Row, actress Jamie Chung has been talking about Zack Snyder’s upcoming film Sucker Punch, in which she is featured alongside Emily Browning, Jenna Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish and supporting players Carla Gugino and Jon Hamm. We know a few things about the film: Browning plays Baby Doll, a girl confined to a mental institution by her stepfather. She escapes into outlandish, violent fantasy to deal with her predicament. Chung gets a bit more specific, though, and her comments follow the break. Are they spoilers? Not really, if you’ve been reading what we’ve covered so far.
ComingSoon has the roundtable talk, in which Chung reiterates that each of the girls cast in the film have one character in the real world and another in fantasy. The core is this:
[Baby Doll] goes into these fever dreams to escape. Somehow her alternate reality affects her reality, just like in ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ All of the characters in her fever dreams are from her real life. And the girls plan to escape and they come up with a plan and things go terribly wrong and it really does affect her reality.
The things going terribly wrong’ sections will likely be seriously violent, and the stunt team Snyder used for 300 are on board, which we already knew. Chung says the film “puts 300 to shame! It’s the same stunt guys, 87Eleven. Damon (Caro) and Logan, the trainer. But it really is 300 but with a female cast.” That being the case, I’m trying to figure out how this will make a PG-13. Not because of the level of violence, but because other reports have said that Baby Doll envisions at least part of the asylum as a brothel, and she’s trying to escape some level of sexual threat. The MPAA is fine with rating violent stuff PG-13, but when sex is brought into the equation everything changes.

Oscar Isaac set for ‘Punch’ |
August 28, 2009 |
|
Oscar Isaac is rounding out the cast of Zack Snyder’s “Sucker Punch.”
The Warner Bros./Legendary drama, centering on a girl who’s institutionalized by her stepfather and retreats into an alternative reality, will begin shooting this fall. Emily Browning plays the girl; Carla Gugino, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone, Scott Glenn and Abbie Cornish are also on board.
Zack and Deborah Snyder are producing “Sucker Punch” through their Cruel & Unusual banner. He’s directing from a script he co-wrote with Steven Shibuya.
Isaac, last seen in “Body of Lies” and “Che,” has been in production on Ridley Scott’s untitled Robin Hood adventure for Universal alongside Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, and William Hurt. He’ll be seen next in Alejandro Amenabar’s romancer “Agora,” with Rachel Weisz, and in indie drama “Balibo,” set amid the Indonesian invasion of East Timor in 1975.
He’s repped by WME and Inspire Entertainment.

Carla Gugino Joins Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch |
August 19, 2009 |
|
It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about Zack Snyder’s upcoming all girl, ass-kicking fest, Sucker Punch. The last time I checked they were playing a serious game of shuffle board with it’s actors. According to Yahoo, we can expect another full blooded female to join the cast in the form of Watchmen alumni, Carla Gugino. The cast currently includes Emily Browning, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, and Abbie Cornish.
Set in the 1950’s, Sucker Punch is about a young girl committed to an insane asylum, who dreams of escaping with the help of her fellow inmates. The leader of the pack is Baby Doll (Browning), a girl who’s step-father plans on having her lobotomized in five days. Gugino will star in the role of Mrs. Schultz, one of the adults at the institution. Since the film will have a pretty heavy dose of action, the primary actresses are currently in martial arts training. Sucker Punch is expected to start shooting this fall in Vancouver.
I love how the description of Gugino’s character is kept so vague. She could be a psycho too for all we know! It would be cool to see her get in on some of the martial arts action as well. We didn’t really get to see much of it in Watchmen.
